Employers care about human behavior within an organization. They look for specific traits that an applicant has to contribute to the climate of the organization in addition to the necessary knowledge and skills a person may have. Out of the five personal qualities or skills within OB (Communication skills, Honesty/integrity, Interpersonal skills, Motivation/initiative, and Strong work ethic), what quality or skill best suits you, and how have you applied them in your personal or professional life?
According to Organizational behavior (2017), the top 5 personal skills are strong work ethic, motivation, interpersonal skills, communication skills, and honesty. The personal quality or skill within OB that best suits me is communication skills. I have always believed that effective communication is essential in any aspect of life, whether it is personal or professional. In my personal life, I have used my communication skills to build strong and meaningful relationships with my family and friends. I make an effort to actively listen to others, express my thoughts and feelings clearly, and engage in open and honest conversations.
In my professional life, communication skills have played a crucial role in my success. As a director of studies, I am responsible for coordinating and leading a team of teachers with diverse backgrounds and skill sets. Effective communication is vital in ensuring that everyone is on the same page, understands their roles and responsibilities, and is able to collaborate efficiently. I have applied my communication skills by conducting weekly meetings, clearly articulating the objectives and expectations of the school, and providing regular training and feedback to team members.
Additionally, I have also used my communication skills to resolve conflicts and address issues within the team. By being an active listener and empathetic communicator, I have been able to understand different perspectives and find solutions that are mutually beneficial. Additionally, I played the role of the mediator between different teachers who had to work together but couldn’t find a way to communicate with each other properly. This has not only improved team dynamics but also fostered a positive work environment where individuals feel valued and heard.
Furthermore, I have utilized my communication skills to effectively communicate with the school leaders, parents of our students (in other words, our clients), and students as well. Clear and concise communication is crucial in managing expectations, addressing concerns, and building strong relationships with all parties. By being able to articulate complex ideas in a simple and understandable manner, I have been able to gain trust and confidence, resulting in successful outcomes.
