Choose and identify your favorite work of art. Your choice can be from any time and place and can challenge the traditional definitions of art. What visual qualities make this item your favorite? Include in your discussion, as appropriate, descriptions of the artist’s (or creator’s) use of formal elements such as line, shape, color, space and other design elements.

My favorite work of art is Vincent van Gogh’s “Starry Night.” This painting was created in 1889, and currently it is housed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City (MoMa, 2000).

What I love most about this painting is its ability to evoke a sense of wonder and awe within me. The swirling, tumultuous sky and the sleepy village below create a sense of movement and energy that draws me in every time I look at it. The use of color is also striking, with deep blues and bright yellows creating a stark contrast that adds to the overall feeling of drama.

Van Gogh’s use of line is also noteworthy. The thick, bold strokes create a sense of movement and urgency, as if the sky is alive and in motion. The cypress tree in the foreground is also a standout element, with its twisted branches adding a touch of whimsy to an otherwise serious piece.

The overall composition of the painting is also impressive. Van Gogh’s use of space creates a sense of depth and perspective, with the village below appearing small and insignificant compared to the vastness of the sky above. The painting feels balanced, with each element carefully placed to create a cohesive whole.

In conclusion, “Starry Night” is my favorite work of art due to its ability to evoke a sense of wonder and awe within me. The use of color, line, and space all contribute to this feeling, creating a painting that is both beautiful and thought-provoking. Van Gogh’s unique style and artistic vision are on full display in this piece, making it a true masterpiece.
